He raps as if he knows these things aren’t what he should be chasing, but they are filling a void in his life. He raps about things that he used to make fun of people for rapping about clothes, cars, money, and all things materialistic. The album starts off with a song that sounds like it could come strait off of his first mixtape “Bastard” because of the soft melodic instrumental and the obvious focus on his bars. The flow from track to track seems effortless, and finding things that are displeasing about the project are honestly very difficult. After only a few listens I found myself humming some of the more melodic and catchier hooks and flows, which is always a good sign. From beginning to end the sounds and instrumentals are interesting and attention grabbing. I have been a fan of Tyler, the Creator and a real “golf boy” myself for a few years now, and “Flower Boy” is my favorite project from Tyler yet. However you interpret the lyrics, you can never take Tyler too seriously, although the sounds and lyrics on this project do sound far more serious and important than anything he has dropped in the past. Tyler has said himself that he has nothing against the LGBTQ community and that what he says are just words that have no meaning. This was such a shock because of what some would consider homophobic lyrics on past projects and previous albums. Since the group he created, “Odd Future”, broke up in the summer of 2015, Tyler has been causing less and less drama over twitter and in his own music.Ībout a week before the release date, a leak of the album hit the internet that had a lot of people buzzing because of lyrics that explicitly suggested that Tyler was coming out of the closet. Tyler, the Creator is notorious for trolling, bullying, and causing internet drama, but on his latest album, “Flower Boy” he seems more socially conscious and serious than ever.
